Seats

We had an early morning flight so we had to get up at 3:30 am. We woke up no problem though and everything was going swimmingly until we got to the gate and found out that we didn’t have seats together.

“We have a baby,” said Lizy, “You had to save twenty dollars. And anyway, my flight is being comped by the University anyway.”

“It was a mistake,” I said, “We all make mistakes. Remember when you poked the baby’s eye. This is like that.”

“But this is a big mistake.”

“We’ll be able to get someone to switch seats with us.”

“Someone’s going to switch an aisle or window for one of our middle seats?”

“I mean we have a baby, someone will switch with us.”

“You better hope so,” she said.

I felt bad, but what could I do? I walked Theodore around the terminal in the stroller so he would stay asleep and the activity had the added bonus that Lizy couldn’t keep hounding me about the seats.

Before we boarded the flight attendant pulled some strings or something and we got seats together. So in the end it didn’t matter after all.

Flight

Theodore did great on the flight. At the time he loved contact napping, so it was sort of an ideal situation for him; he was surrounded by his family and we couldn’t put him down. I thought the flight went by too fast. I didn’t have time to eat all the snacks I had packed. I only had time to do one quarter of a crossword puzzle. I didn’t read from my copy of King Lear at all. Lizy and I only listened to half a podcast together.

Lizy and I changed Theodore while he was lying across our laps. Mid change he started pooing. Lizy caught the oozing poo coming out of his butt with a wet wipe, but at the end of the change we noticed that she was only mostly successful and some of the poo had gotten on his outfit. Luckily we had another outfit to change him into.

I packed leftover Nicoise Salad and boiled eggs in separate containers because I thought Lizy might have a chance of eating the Nicoise salad if it didn’t have eggs. But once she smelled the salad, I realized there was no point because the smell of the day old tuna alone almost made her gag.

“You’re the guy that microwaves fish in the break room,” she said to me.

“It’s not so bad.”

“I can’t pretend to not be with you, you already changed his diaper.”

“C’mon now.”

“I can’t believe you brought that whole big container of it too. You’re not going to be able to finish that much on the plane.”

“You’re not going to be pleased with the size of the second container then. It’s a little bigger.”

Getting to Miami

Room1

Room2

The first thing I noticed in the airport is that everyone speaks Spanish. It’s like the first language of Miami. The second thing I noticed was the humidity.

We took a Lyft to the hotel room. The room was beautiful and spacious. It was a suite with a kitchen and a living room in addition to the bedroom. One weird quirk of the suite I noticed was that, as sort of a center piece, on the kitchen table was a fancy teapot, however there were no tea bags or a kettle. I looked high and low throughout the room. There definitely was no tea or kettle. So I guess the teapot was just a decoration.

Dinner

Evening1

Lizy went out for dinner with two professors from the university. Theodore and I walked to the metrobus and I took him on his first public transportation experience. He fell asleep right away. Classic Theodore. The metrobus was nice, but it seemed at first glance to me that it wasn’t particularly built up near the stations like in Toronto or near BART stations in the bay area, so I was a little confused how people used it effectively.

We ate dinner at Havana Harry’s, a Cuban restaurant. I got Tres Vacas, a plate of shredded beef, pork, and chicken with beans, rice, and plantains. The portion was quite large.

After missing a bus, I ended up walking the forty minutes back to the hotel. It was a nice walk.

Evening2

Back at the hotel

I got back to the hotel room and Lizy got back from dinner just a little bit later. She told me she had come down with a cold. But she couldn’t cancel the interview. She had come all this way.

I got some cold medicine in the lobby for her and I told her maybe it would pass and she would be better tomorrow.
